BUENA VISTA, Va.—The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team dropped its season home opener on Saturday at The Fields to the Richmond Club Spiders 28-3.

"Our team played a competitive and strong program in Richmond [Club]," said first-year Head Coach Steve Macurdy. "We played well throughout the first half, but had some defensive breakdowns in the second half that we'll improve upon."

The University of Richmond Club team (1-0) jumped ahead early 2-0 before a first period goal by Southern Virginia's (0-1) sophomore midfielder Ryan Larsen (Mesa, Ariz.) from ten yards out cut the lead 2-1.

In the middle of the first quarter, freshman midfielder David Hostetter (Randolph, Vt.) scored his first career goal as a Knight connecting on a shot fifteen yards out.

Southern Virginia's third and final goal of the day came in the second quarter when senior attacker Joshua Neilson (Turlock, Calif.) scooped up a groundball on a broken play in front of the Spiders' net for the easy score before Richmond widened the margin to a 21-2 lead on route to its 25-goal victory.

Defensively, junior transfer goalkeeper Justin Thompson (Lehi, Utah) recorded ten saves against the soon-to-be NCAA Division I Richmond Club.

Men's lacrosse returns to action in its second straight home contest at The Fields against NCAA Division III Randolph College on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 12 p.m.
