ELON, NC - The Southern Virginia University lacrosse team took a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period, but the hosts Elon Phoenix, roared back for 9 unanswered goals to beat the Knights, 12-5. On goals from Thomas Trammel, Sam Pond, and Mark Lundgren, the Knights had jumped to the early lead against the hosts. Both teams were getting shots off, but goalie Jordan Sorensen was up to the task in the early portion of the game, and kept out all but one shot in the first period.
An upset for the Knights was not on the cards, as Elon was able to get five goals in the second period. SVU suffered lapses in concentration, and back-to-back penalties gave the hosts a chance for man-up opportunities which they pounced on. Elon was 3-for-5 in man-up chances, and made SVU pay in the second period.
The Knights suffered in the second period, as they could muster only 5-shots in the second period and 8-shots in the third. The Phoenix in that time tallied 29-shots to put the game out of reach from the Knights.
Sorensen would finish with 23-saves after facing 51-shots. Sam Garcia and Ben Dieker would get the Knights on the board twice more in the end of the fourth period. Turnovers and penalties killed the Knights as well, as the visitors coughed up the ball 20-times, and committed 7-penalties for 7:30.
SVU would finish with 38-shots, with seventeen on target. The loss is the third loss for the Knights, and is especially painful for SVU, as it starts the conference schedule at 0-1. The Knights will have a two week break before they travel to take on Savannah College of Art and Design, and Georgia State at the SCAD Invitational. First game is against Georgia State at 10:00 am.
