BUENA VISTA, Va. - A hat-trick from Sam Pond was not enough for the Southern Virginia University lacrosse team, as the Knights dropped a 13-8 game to Carnegie Mellon. Pond registered goals in the second and third period, as the Knights tried to rebound from an early deficit to the Tartans.
Carnegie Mellon scored first in the first period before Greg Lane evened the game in the beginning of the second. Ben Dieker gave the Knights a 3-2 lead before the visitors evened the game in the dying seconds of the first half.
In the second term, Carnegie Mellon took the initiative, and registered 5-goals to take a 8-6 lead. Pond finished out his hat rick to keep the Knights within striking distance of the visitors. CMU had other plans, and used the fourth quarter to close out the game, as the Tartans outscored the Knights 5-2 for the eventual 13-8 win.
SVU had ample opportunities in the game for the win, with 30-shots against the Tartans' goal, but the SVU defense could not find a solution to the CMU attack. Jordan Sorensen was able to make 16-saves, but missed crucial saves to get the Knights their second win of the season.
SVU now stands at 1-3 on the season. The Knights will have a layoff of a week-and-a-half, before a March 1 game with Randolph on Lynchburg. Game time is set at 6:00 pm.
