BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Southern Virginia University lacrosse team mounted a comeback against visiting Shorter College, but the tying goal bounced off the post allowing the visiting Hawks to sneak out with an 11-10 win over the Knights. The visitors jumped to an early lead, and the remaining first period saw both teams with opportunities for goals, but few goals until a flurry of scores at the end of the first period. Sam Garcia scored the first goal of the season for the Knights at the 3:35 mark.
Ben Dieker scored the next goal to give the Knights their only lead of the game. Dieker's goal was the first of four for the freshman, as he would score three more goals in the fourth quarter as the Knights mounted a comeback. Garcia added two more goals to his tally, to finish with the hat-trick.
Shorter would score four goals in the second period, while the hosts could muster only two goals to trail 6-4 at the break. Jordan Sorensen was anchoring a defensive line that was facing a strong Shorter offense. The senior goalie would finish with 20-saves on the day, and faced several more shots that came close throughout the game.
Another four-goal period for Shorter in the third period just put the game out of reach for the Knights, as their own four-goals in the fourth was not enough. Late in the fourth period the Knights had several opportunities, and had a shot hit the post, and another just miss wide with less than a minute in the game.
SVU finished with 35-shots for the game, and also added 4-assists to the 10-goal tally. Dieker had two of those assists, while Sam Pond added an assist and Ben Tillotson added one too. The Knights suffered in restarts, as they lost 16-of-24 faceoffs in the match.
The Knights will look to regroup quickly, as they will travel to Ferrum on Feb. 12 for a game against the Panthers. Game time for the match is set at 1:00 pm.
