BUENA VISTA, Va. A Brian Flood goal at the :53 mark of the second overtime gave the Southern Virginia Lacrosse team a much needed victory over East Carolina 8-7. The Knights were able to rebound after a tough game the week before. SVU jumped to the lead at the end of the first quarter 2-1. Two Tommy Trammel goals gave the hosts a lead heading into the second quarter.
The Knights tacked on three more goals in the lead up to halftime, with Flood bagging his first goal of the afternoon. The hosts looked to have control of the game as they went in to the break up 5-3. The Knight offense unfortunately went quiet in the third quarter, going the full fifteen minutes without registering a goal. The lack of scoring was not for lack of effort as the team put up the most shots of any quarter in the game. 16-shots flew at the Pirate goalie without one getting past, as the Knights totaled 41-shots for the game.
The lack of scoring gave the visitors the chance they needed to get back in the game, as they got within one goal heading into the fourth quarter. SVU added two goals in the fourth, but the Pirates tied the game with 1:32 left, and forced the game to overtime.
In the first overtime both teams had opportunities for the win, but neither could get the winning goal. The Knights added 6-shots to their overall total. With time winding down in the second overtime, Flood performed his heroics to get the hosts a well-deserved win. The goal also gave Flood a hat trick for the day.
SVU is now 4-3 on the season. SVU will return to action Apr. 1 when the team travels to play at High Point. Game time is 7:30 pm.
