Coastal Proves Too Much For SVU

DAVIDSON, N.C., As a playoff team in the SELC last year, Coastal Carolina proved to have too much experience as they beat the Southern Virginia Lacrosse team 7-4. The Knights were looking for a strong start to the season after an 11-10 victory over Davidson the night before. Coastal had other plans as they rushed to a 5-2 lead heading into the second half. Led by third quarter goals from Baden Bagley and Brian Flood SVU got within a point of the Chanticleers, but the hosts were able to ice the game in the fourth with two goals of their own.

"Our defense stepped up well tonight," said Head Coach Chad Mahaffey. "We didn't drop our heads when we got down, and we battled back after a rough first-half. Coastal is a quality program, and they went to the playoffs last year. We stayed with them. The difference is that our team needs to gel, and understand our team chemistry to be successful. I'm confident it will happen soon."

The Knights were unable to match their offensive output from the previous game as they could only muster 23-shots, and converted on only four. Jordan Sorensen again played a key role for the Knights as he kept the Chanticleers at bay stopping 17-shots. Face-offs were another strength for SVU as the team won 9 opportunities compared to 5 for Coastal.

The Knights are now 1-1 on the season. SVU will return to action Feb. 27 when they host Appalachian State, UNC-Greensboro and Carnegie Melon in a daylong tournament. Competitions begin at 10:00 am.
