BUENA VISTA, Va. A Logan Murray goal with :40 left on the clock pushed the Southern Virginia Lacrosse team to a 9-8 overtime victory over Aquinas. The Knights had squandered a 2-goal lead in the latter stages of the fourth quarter, and the game went to the sudden-death overtime, where the home team got the goal.
The Knights started out under the gun, as Aquinas scored in the first five minutes for the 1-0 lead. SVU got back into it and took a 2-1 lead on goals from Baden Bagley and Greg Lane. The duo would be the leading scorers as they would combine for 7-goals (Bagley 3 and Lane 4).
Aquinas would hit back against the Knights as the teams went to the break at 3-3. Jordan Sorensen had come up big for SVU as he had recorded 14 saves in the first term. Sorensen would be called on again at the start of the second half, as Aquinas put the Knights' goal under a shooting barrage.
Aquinas did strike first, but SVU was able to put three more on the board, and led heading into the fourth quarter up 6-5. SVU struck twice more, and looked to have locked up the game on Lane's fourth goal at 2:57, before Aquinas fought back to send the game to extra time.
Sorensen was a key factor to the game as he recorded 28-saves, and was able to keep the team in the hunt for the win. The nights totaled 26-shots.
The Knights were able to get 30-groundballs. Penalties played a role in the game, as both teams had frequent trips to the sideline to serve time.
SVU now sits at 3-3 on the season. The Knights return to action March 20, when they host UNC-Charlotte. The game starts at 3:00 pm.
