HAMPTON, Va.—Competing for the first time in nearly two years, the Southern Virginia University men's golf team finished 3rd out of three teams in the 2011 Fall Invitational hosted by The Apprentice School at The Woodlands course in Hampton, Va.
Southern Virginia's five golfers shot a collective 356 for the tournament finishing at 80 strokes over par on the par-69, 5,391-yard course.
The Knights were bested by both of the Shipbuilders' teams as Apprentice shot 305 (+29) to finish first, while Apprentice Gold came in at second shooting 328 (+52) for the day.
Jake Messerly (North Ogden, Utah) was Southern Virginia's top finisher at nine strokes over par (78) placing fifth out of 13 golfers.
The remaining four Knights—Cordell Rainock (Mechanicsville, Va.), Zach Garner (Boise, Idaho), Andrew Snider (Lancaster, Calif.) and Jaden Welsh (Washington Terrace, Utah)—finished 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th respectively.
Men's golf has a dual match against VMI on Thursday, Sep. 29 followed by the Red Polin Invitational at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, Pa. on Monday, Oct. 3.
