Southern Virginia Places 14th at Nationals

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.—Competing in its first national tournament in two seasons, the Southern Virginia University men's golf team finished 14th out of 17 teams at the 2011 USCAA Golf National Championships held on Monday and Tuesday at the Penn State Blue Course in University Park, Pa.

Jake Messerly (North Ogden, Utah) was Southern Virginia's top individual finisher shooting rounds of 78 and 77, which good enough to tie with three other competitors for tenth place in a field of more than 100 golfers.

Messerly was followed by teammates Jaden Welsh (Washington Terrace, Utah), Andrew Snider (Lancaster, Calif.), Cordell Rainock (Mechanicsville, Va.) and Frank Skeen (Nyssa, Ore.) who finished 82nd, 88th, 90th and 92nd respectively.

Overall Southern Virginia scored 739 for the tournament finishing at 163 total strokes over par on a very long and difficult 7,228-yard, par-72 course.

"I was proud of our team's performance and Jake played particularly well," said head coach Brian Pendleton. "This is a good starting point as we begin to rebuild our program and we'll continue to improve going forward."
