Tony Caputo is the head men's basketball coach, head men's tennis coach and assistant athletic director at Southern Virginia University.

In his first season at the helm of men's basketball, Caputo led Southern Virginia in 2012-13 with a 17-7 record, registering the fewest losses (7) and second-highest winning percentage (.708) in program history along with extending a program-record 28-game home winning streak. 

Caputo has experienced additional coaching success winning national championships as head men’s soccer coach (2000), assistant men’s soccer coach (2001) and assistant men’s basketball coach (2011). He is Southern Virginia’s all-time winningest coach for both men’s soccer (52-40-1) and men’s tennis (42-27).

During spring 2012, he led the men's tennis team to a 15-1 record, which not only set the mark for best record in program history, but also the best single-season winning percentage (.938) of any athletic team in university history.

Caputo came to Southern Virginia in 1998 as director of continuing education. He later served as assistant dean of admissions and acting director of admissions before becoming dean of admissions and financial aid in 1999—a position he held until 2008. During Caputo’s time as dean of admissions, Southern Virginia’s student population more than tripled in size.

Before coming to Southern Virginia, Caputo taught for 14 years—primarily American history and physical education—in three different Utah school districts. During that time, Caputo successfully coached several varsity sports, helping three different men’s basketball teams reach the state championship game.

Caputo graduated in 1984 from then Weber State College with a B.A. in history and was recognized as the outstanding physical education minor that year. In 1998 he received a master’s degree in education from Southern Utah University.

He served a fulltime mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Scotland.

Caputo resides in Buena Vista with his wife Tammy. They have four children.

Tony Clark is assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach for the Southern Virginia University men’s basketball program.

In his first season with the Knights, Clark helped men's basketball to a 17-7 finish and a trip to the semifinal round of the USCAA Division I Men's Basketball National Tournament. 

Before coming to Southern Virginia, Clark spent eight years coaching high school basketball in the state of Virginia, most recently as the head boy’s basketball coach at King George High School (2009-10). Prior to his stint at King George, Clark spent three years (2006-09) as Lafayette High School’s head coach leading his team to the program’s first postseason victory in 2007.

Clark also coached high school girl’s basketball at Middleburg Academy (2005-06) and Fort Defiance High School (2002-05), which included a trip to the Virginia State AA Final Four in 2004.

A 1991 graduate from Lexington High School, Clark had a standout career as shooting guard. He also played tight end and linebacker on Lexington’s 1988 state championship football team.

Clark has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from James Madison University. He lives in Lexington, Va., with his wife and four children.

Alan Whitehead is going into his second year as the assistant varsity coach for the men’s basketball program at Southern Virginia University. He played basketball for Ricks College (now BYU-Idaho) where he was an NJCAA Academic All-American. Whitehead previously coached in the new Athletics program at BYU-Idaho after intercollegiate sports were eliminated.

Whitehead also serves as the Director of Admissions for the university responsible for the enrollment of all new students. He is currently a Ph.D student studying Industrial/Organizational Psychology. He plans to focus his dissertation research on Positive Psychology and Humor Studies. He earned an MBA from Argosy University in Denver and his undergraduate degree in Business Management from BYU-Idaho. Whitehead served as an LDS missionary in Houston, Texas. He and his wife, Nina, reside in Buena Vista with their daughter, Azalea.
