Tony Caputo is the head men's basketball coach, head men's tennis coach and assistant athletic director at Southern Virginia University.

In his first season at the helm of men's basketball, Caputo led Southern Virginia in 2012-13 with a 17-7 record, registering the fewest losses (7) and second-highest winning percentage (.708) in program history along with extending a program-record 28-game home winning streak.

Caputo has experienced additional coaching success winning national championships as head men’s soccer coach (2000), assistant men’s soccer coach (2001) and assistant men’s basketball coach (2011). He is Southern Virginia’s all-time winningest coach for both men’s soccer (52-40-1) and men’s tennis (60-43).  He led men's tennis to a fourth-place finish in its first year competing in the CAC with an 11-8 record, and his 2012 men's soccer squad finished with a 10-7 record.

During spring 2012, he led the men's tennis team to a 15-1 record, which not only set the mark for best record in program history, but also the best single-season winning percentage (.938) of any athletic team in university history.

Caputo came to Southern Virginia in 1998 as director of continuing education. He later served as assistant dean of admissions and acting director of admissions before becoming dean of admissions and financial aid in 1999—a position he held until 2008. During Caputo’s time as dean of admissions, Southern Virginia’s student population more than tripled in size.

Before coming to Southern Virginia, Caputo taught for 14 years—primarily American history and physical education—in three different Utah school districts. During that time, Caputo successfully coached several varsity sports, helping three different men’s basketball teams reach the state championship game.

In 2010, he was recognized for his outstanding service to the university with the prestigious Ed and Chieko Okasaki Service Award.

Caputo graduated in 1984 from Weber State University with a B.A. in history and was recognized as the outstanding physical education minor that year. In 1998 he received a master’s degree in education from Southern Utah University.

He served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Scotland.

Caputo resides in Buena Vista with his wife, Tammy. They have four children.
