LEXINGTON, VA. — The Southern Virginia University men's basketball team made program history Tuesday night, defeating cross-town rival Washington and Lee University 79-78 courtesy of a Conner Marchant buzzer-beater.

  • The Knights outshot the Generals from behind the arc 40.7% to 28.6%
  • Southern Virginia outrebounded W&L 38 to 37 while dishing out more assists 15-9

Game Notes

  • The Knights never trailed in the first half of play after Conner Marchant got the team going with a three-pointer just 13 seconds into the game
  • Malakai Olson gave Southern Virginia their largest lead of the half following a layup to put the squad up 23-12 midway through the half
  • Olson went on to lead the team in the first half with 11 points while dominating on the boards with five rebounds
  • Elliot Spencer impressed with a solid nine-point contribution and two assists
  • The Knights outshot the Generals from the field 52.8% to 51.7%, and from behind the arc 38.5% to 33.3% to head into the halftime break up 44-40
  • Midway through the second half of play, W&L managed to snag their first lead of the game after Robert Disibio made a free throw to put his team up 63-62
  • Malakai Olson did not let that lead last long after hitting a layup to put the team back up 64-63
  • A controversial timeout called by the Generals kept possession their way with 24 seconds left in the match
  • With eight seconds left, W&L made a free throw that gave them a two-point advantage, but Southern Virginia called timeout to advance the ball over midcourt to set up the game-winning play with four seconds left
  • Elliot Spencer inbounded the play to Isaiah Marchant, who spotted his brother Conner Marchant who sank the final shot of the game to make program history and lock in the team's first victory over Washington and Lee

The Knights open conference play against Mary Baldwin on the road Tuesday, November 30. Game time is slated for 6 pm.
