Men's Basketball Wins Season Opener Against Eastern Mennonite

BUENA VISTA, VA. — The Southern Virginia University men's basketball team debuted in their 2021-2022 season, taking Eastern Mennonite University in Knight Arena Tuesday night. The Knights locked in their season-opening victory, defeating the Royals 78-75.

  • With the score knotted at 12 in the first half, Malakai Olson sparked an 11-point run for Souther Virginia, making the new score 23-12
  • Kade Harrick and Aaron Leavitt both added back-to-back three-point shots, extending the Knights lead to 15 32-17 with seven minutes remaining in the half
  • Connor Marchant added a final three-pointer in the final minute of the first half, sending Southern Virginia into the halftime break with the 52-37 lead
  • The Knights started the second half hot, scoring two consecutive three-pointers by Isaiah Marchant and Elliot Spencer
  • Scottie Ziegner continued showing his skills from range, draining his third bucket from behind the arch
  • Late in the game, Southern Virginia held onto a 75-69 lead, following an Elliot Spencer layup
  • The Royals managed to make it a one-point game 75-74 after Michael Watlington recorded a layup
  • EMU committed a costly charging foul with two seconds remaining in the game, giving the ball back over to Southern Virginia, locking in the win for the Knights

Southern Virginia continues its season, competing in the UR Chuck Resler Basketball Invitational Friday, November 12, and Saturday, November 13. Game one is scheduled versus Houghton at 1 pm, and game two is scheduled against The College of New Jersey at 1 pm.
