NEWPORT NEWS — The Southern Virginia University men's basketball team suffered an 89-59 loss in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinal to No. 11 Christopher Newport ending the 2018-19 season.
In the first half, the Knights (4-22) were held to 38.5 percent from the floor and just 10 percent from behind the arc by the Captains (22-3) defense. Southern Virginia could not slow down the Christopher Newport offense as they shot 50 percent for the half and 56.5 percent from deep. Jamier Cross led the Knights with ten points entering the half down 54-25.
Southern Virginia played close to even in the second half, the Captains only outscoring 35-34. The Knights shot 50 percent from the field and from downtown. The large first-half lead doomed the Knights as they were unable to get back into the game falling 89-59.
Cross was the only Knight to reach double-figures ending with 13 while also leading the team with seven rebounds and three assists. Trey Dill and Alec Johnson finished with nine points each and Tyler McCreadie and Austin Wood rounded out the starters each scoring eight points.
Jason Aigner of the Christopher Newport led all scorers with 23 points.
