Men's Basketball With Come-From-Behind Win on Senior Day

BUENA VISTA, Va. — Led by a combined 39 points from seniors Aarun Rumbaugh and Cale Thornton on senior day, the Southern Virginia Unversity men's basketball team won a 72-70 nail-biter in front of the home crowd Sunday afternoon over Capital Athletic Conference opponent St. Mary's College of Maryland.

Rumbaugh, Thornton, and Casuan Caudle, the three Southern Virginia (10-13, 5-11 CAC) seniors, were honored before the game and started for the Knights.

"It was great to see each of our seniors step up and play their part tonight," said head coach Tony Caputo. "Everyone played their role and we made some big plays down the stretch."

The Knights trailed by seven at the intermission despite leading by six at the very beginning of the half.

With just under ten minutes remaining in the second half, the Seahawks () took a ten point lead, 59-49. St. Mary's kept a two-possession spread down the stretch and led by nine with 3:31 left, but then everything changed.

A St. Mary's foul send Aarun Rumbaugh to the line where he knocked down both free thows to start the Knights' 13-1 run. After a quick Rumbaugh steal and dish to Kellen Winslow, the Knights found themselves down only four with three minutes to go. The lead was cut to two after a Thornton layup with just under two minutes left. On the next possession, Thornton was whistled for a foul, and the Seahawks scored their final point of the game after going one for two from the line.

Rumbaugh made another pair of free throws with 1:23 left before stealing an inbounds pass and laying in the game-winner with 35 seconds to go. An Alec Johnson free throw with 18 seconds remaining locked up the final score, 72-70.

Rumbaugh finished with a game-high 20 points and a career-high seven steals. He also pulled down six boards and had four assists. Thornton finished with a near double-double performance of 19 points and nine rebounds. Johnson and Justin Prisbrey finished with nine points apiece.

The Knights will play their final home game of the season on Wednesday, February 14 against Frostburg State. Game time will be earlier than normal, with tipoff set at 6 p.m. Eastern.
