BUENA VISTA, Va.—The Southern Virginia University men's basketball team earned a much-needed victory Saturday afternoon by a score of 69-62 over Penn St. Harrisburg. Jaron Anderson, Sam Armstrong, and Alec Johnson combined for 38 of the Knights' points.
The Knights (8-11, 3-9 CAC) came out in the first half, taking a 12-6 lead heading into the first media timeout. The rest of the first half, however, was dominated by Penn St. Harrisburg (6-13, 2-10 CAC) as the Lions took a 33-27 lead going into the break.
The Lions clung to their lead in the second half until the 8:31 mark when Jaron Anderson of the Knights hit a big three-pointer approaching the end of the shot clock to tie up the game at 48. The lead changed a couple more times before Southern Virginia took a three-possession lead under a minute to go.
Southern Virginia outscored Penn St.-Harrisburg 42-29 in the second half.
Despite a little foul trouble from big men Cale Thornton and Bennett Candland, the Knights outrebounded the Lions 39 to 30 and doubled their opponents' assists 12 to 6. Jaron Anderson led all scorers with 16 points while Sam Armstrong and Alec Johnson added 11 apiece. Aarun Rumbaugh led the Knights with 9 boards and chipped in eight points. Anderson and Armstrong each splashed three treys.
The Lions only shot 1-12 from the three-point line while the Knights managed to shoot 6-20 from behind the arc and 42.6% overall.
The Knights hope to put together their first CAC win streak of the season as they play host to the Saints of Marymount. The game will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m.
