BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's basketball team lost a 12-point Capital Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday night against the University of Mary Washington, 82-70.
The Knights (4-4, 1-3 CAC) recorded their fourth straight game of shooting better than 48% from the field (53.1%) and hit five threes, but trailed the Eagles (6-2, 2-1 CAC) 42-34 at the intermission.
Southern Virginia kept up its scoring pace in the second half but was unable to scratch away the lead.
Senior center Cale Thornton (Lyman, Maine) led the Knights with a 16-point 10-rebound double-double. He was followed by Aarun Rumbaugh (Auburn, Wash.), Justin Prisbrey (Enterprise, Utah), and Jaron Anderson (Cottonwood Heights, Utah) who scored 14, 13, and 12 points, respectively. Rumbaugh pulled down six boards and had four assists.
The Knights outshot the Eagles 53.1% to 40.8%, but lost the rebounding battle 35-28 overall and allowed 20 offensive boards.
Southern Virginia will continue its four-game homestand on Saturday against Carolina Christian. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. and will be broadcast live.
