Knights Fall, Captains Become Regular-Season CAC Champions

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia University men's basketball team fell 69-45 to the third-ranked team in the country, Christopher Newport University, Wednesday night.

The Captains (22-2, 16-1 CAC) became the Capital Athletic Conference regular season champions with the win, paired with Salisbury's loss at St. Mary's (Md.).

The Knights (4-20, 2-15 CAC) scored the opening basket, a three-pointer from senior Justin Langford, but the Captains came back with a three of their own, took the lead, and never looked back.

The No. 1 defense in the country held the Knights to 21 first-half points and 45 total points, the lowest of the season.

Junior center Cale Thornton led the way for the Knights with 10 points and nine rebounds. Leading scorer Rashay Douglas recorded seven points.

Michael Price and Alec Johnson recorded a game-high three steals. Price also pulled down five boards.

Southern Virginia closes its 2016-17 campaign hosting St. Mary's College of Maryland at 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 18 in the Knight Sports Arena.
