Caputo Announces 2014-15 Men’s Basketball Schedule

BUENA VISTA, Va.—After finalizing a few unsettled dates, Southern Virginia University men's basketball head coach Tony Caputo announced his team's 2014-15 slate Wednesday morning.

Highlighted by its first ever trip to Provo, Utah to face Brigham Young University, Southern Virginia will face a variety of opponents from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in addition to United States Collegiate Athletic Association strongholds St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) and The Apprentice School.

In a historic event for both the men's basketball program and the university, the Knights travel to BYU for a Wednesday, Nov. 19 matchup at the Marriott Center. A nationally recognized NCAA Division I program, the Cougars finished with a 23-12 record last season before falling in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

BYU head coach Dave Rose owns a 232-78 (.748) record at the helm and has led the Cougars to the NCAA Tournament in seven of his nine years in the position.

"It will be the best team that any sport from Southern Virginia has ever faced," Caputo said. "I'm grateful to Coach Rose for this opportunity and we are really excited to play that game. BYU is one of the top Division I basketball programs in the country and one that I try to model."

The Knights open the season with two scrimmages against ODAC schools Washington & Lee and Eastern Mennonite before starting the regular season at Emory & Henry on Saturday, Nov. 15.

"We have a solid range of non-conference opponents that will prepare us well for the challenges that await in the Capital Athletic Conference," Caputo said. "The ODAC is a very strong conference and we're in close proximity to them."

Following a four-team tournament at Roanoke College from Nov. 21-22, Southern Virginia begins league play at home against Marymount on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Knight Sports Arena. The Knights also take a quick Thanksgiving trip up to Brooklyn, New York, to face USCAA opponent St. Joseph's on Saturday, Nov. 29.

"We get a bounceback game against St. Joseph's, which won the Hudson Valley Athletic Conference last year," Caputo said. "We beat them here last year so they'll be ready for us. They have a brand new beautiful facility and we'll be one of their first opponents to play in it."

CAC play continues on Dec. 3 at Christopher Newport followed by a game at home against Wesley College on Dec. 6 preceding Christmas break.  The regular season ends Feb. 21 at home against St. Mary's before the CAC Tournament runs from Feb. 24-28.

"St. Mary's and Christopher Newport will be very good and will probably be ranked at the top of the preseason poll," Caputo said. "They both finished in the top four of the CAC last year and they return a lot of their guys. Mary Washington lost a bunch of seniors from last year but they have a new coach from national power Cabrini, so they'll be good really fast."
