The last meeting between the two teams occurred on Jan. 18 in Buena Vista, Va., with the Knights picking up their second conference victory, 82-64, over the Spartans. The Knights ended the half in the lead, 45-24, on 90 percent shooting from the stripe, 55 percent from the arc and 57 percent from the field. The Knights came out strong in the second half and capitalized on free throws to help earn a 23-point lead and ultimately win the game by an 82-64 score on 15-17 free throws, 9-21 on three pointers, and 29-59 from the field.
About the Knights
Southern Virginia has one last chance to improve their 6-15 record as they hit the road to compete with York College (3-13) for the last game of the season. The Knights are coming off a close loss against No. 19 Mary Washington on Wednesday and are looking to prevent a three-game skid.
Junior guard Preston Eaton continues to lead the team at 16.2 ppg and will look to top his 15 points scored previously against the Spartans. Eaton shoots 76 percent on free throws, 41 percent from the field and 37 percent from three-point range. Fellow guard Chris Baker averages 13.5 ppg, leads the team from the stripe at 77 percent, shoots 34 percent from the arc and 37 percent from the field. Baker poured in a team-high 17 points against the Spartans and recorded 11 boards on Jan. 18.
Wesley Evans and freshman Michael Price each dumped in 14 points previously against the Spartans and average 10.0 and 9.4 ppg, respectively. Price continues to lead the team in steals with 40 while Evans has a team high of 6.5 rebounds per game.
Kenrick Hart is coming off a career high of 32 points against No. 19 Mary Washington and averages 9.4 ppg, 3.5 rebounds and is shooting nearly 70 percent from the line, 41 percent from the three point range, and 48 percent from the field.
About the Spartans
The Spartans are on a four-game losing streak and recently lost 77-74 to Frostburg State. The Spartans are looking for one last home victory as their season comes to a close on Saturday.
The team shoots 42 percent from the field, 32 percent from the arc and 63 percent on free throws. Senior guard Mike Mathews leads the Spartans with an average of 12.4 ppg and averages 5.7 rebounds per game. Not far behind on points, Matt McNeely averages 11.7 ppg and leads on rebounds with 6.3 per game.
Freshman guard Ryan Beaver leads the team from the stripe at 90.
The Spartans are currently eighth in the Capital Athletic Conference standings.
