BUENA VISTA, Va.—A quick start by the Southern Virginia University men's basketball team allowed the Knights to earn its second league victory of the year with an 82-64 triumph over visiting York College (Pa.) Saturday afternoon at Knight Sports Arena in Buena Vista, Va.

The Knights (4-7) jumped to a 45-24 lead by the half after shooting nearly 58 percent (15-of-26) from the field, including 5-for-9 from three-point range (56 percent) and 10-for-11 from the free-throw line. The Spartans (2-13, 1-7) shot 53 percent in the second half but shot 30 percent (8-for-26) in the opening half to finish the game at 42 percent.

Southern Virginia finished the game at 88 percent from the free-throw line after converting 15 of 17 attempts.

"I'm happy with the win because it was an overall team effort," said Southern Virginia head coach Tony Caputo. "As we battled foul trouble in the first half, the bench players came in and did a nice job for us. We passed the ball well to hit the open man on offense, and on defense we rebounded well even though they were bigger than us.

"Chris Baker did a great job helping us rebound the ball, and Cody Hosier was huge off the bench and provided a big spark for us."

Baker paced the Knights with 17 points during the game scoring six baskets and going 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. The Columbia, Md., native earned his first double-double of the year by grabbing 11 boards, including three on the offensive end. He also achieved a team-high seven assists and four steals.

Hosier went 4-for-7 from the field and 3-for-5 from three-point range en route to 11 points to help the Knights earn the win. Junior guard Preston Eaton also went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line on his way to 15 points.

Forward Wesley Evans and freshman Michael Price each had 14 points, combining for 12 buckets and two three-pointers. Price also had four steals in the game to match Baker's defensive efforts.

York was led by Mike Mathews, who scored 14 points with six buckets, while Brad Wesner and B.J. Enck each had 11 points.

Southern Virginia rebounds with a quick visit on Monday to conference opponent Salisbury to make up for their game previously scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Salisbury, Md.
