Men’s Basketball Falls to Defiance College to Open Season

LEXINGTON, Va.—Opening the 2013-14 on a neutral court, the Southern Virginia University men's basketball team was defeated by Defiance College by an 87-47 score at Washington & Lee's Warner Center Friday night in Lexington, Va.

The Knights struggled from the field in the loss, shooting 17-of-54 from the field with only two three-pointers made during the night. Southern Virginia was outscored 40-19 in the opening half and could not find the firepower in the second half to make a comeback.

Junior guard Chris Baker led the Knights with 10 points during the game on 2-of-7 shooting and converting the team's two three-pointers.  He was also a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line to go along with two assists and two steals in 18 minutes of play.

Guard Emmitt Mosely contributed seven points in the game by going 3-for-3 from the field while junior Wesley Evans and sophomore Ben Canevari each scored six points. Freshman Bryan Olorunda put in five points for the Knights.

Travis Schomaeker of Defiance led the Yellow Jackets with 17 points during the game by going 6-for-13 from the field and 5-for-9 from beyond the arc to lead his team to the win. Mason Roth scored 13 for the team going 3-for-8 from the field but shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Four others combined to score 33 points for the Yellow Jackets.

The Knights will face host Washington & Lee on Saturday's day two of the Tip-Off Tournament after the Generals were defeated by Ferrum College Friday night by a 77-72 score. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Washington & Lee's Warner Center in Lexington, Va.
