BUENA VISTA, Va.—Four different Knights reached double figures on Saturday as the Southern Virginia University men's basketball team extended its current home winning streak to 23 games with a 88-69 victory over Berkeley College of New Jersey in the final game of the 2013 Knight New Year Classic.
"Berkeley is a really scrappy team that never stops coming at you," said first-year Head Coach Tony Caputo after Saturday's win. "It's always great when you can come out of a classic like this with two solid victories."
Less than 24 hours after defeating Virginia University of Lynchburg 82-54 on Friday in the opening game of the Knight New Year Classic, Southern Virginia (8-3) hosted Berkeley (10-9) on Saturday afternoon and the two teams played to a 9-9 tie over the opening eight-and-a-half minutes of play.
A made 3-pointer from John Woodson (Kansas City, Mo.) at the 11:23 mark sparked a 28-14 Southern Virginia run over the remainder of the first half giving the Knights a 14-point advantage at intermission.
Southern Virginia's lead remained in double digits throughout the entire second half despite an inspired effort from Berkeley's Isaac Robinson, who led all scorers with 29 points on 11-for-19 shooting.
Casey Nye (Kaysville, Utah) followed Friday's 25-point performance with a team-high 18 points on Saturday and was named MVP of the weekend's classic. Nye was joined on the All-Classic Team by teammate Isaac Jacobson (Kitty Hawk, N.C.), who added 12 points and a game-high 5 assists after recording 13 and 6 the previous night against Virginia-Lynchburg.
Anders Jacobson (Kitty Hawk, N.C.) was Southern Virginia's second-leading scorer on the evening with 14 points and Payton Brooks (Beaverton, Ore.) rounded out the Knights' double-digit scorers with 11 points.
Southern Virginia controlled the boards during Saturday's win outrebounding Berkeley 46-34 for the game as the three Jacobson brothers—A. Jacobson, I. Jacobson and Jonathan Jacobson (Kitty Hawk, N.C.)—finished the game with 7 rebounds apiece.
Men's basketball now has only two days to recover before traveling to West Virginia University at Parkersburg on Tuesday, Jan. 15 for a matchup with the Riverhawks at 6 p.m.
