Written by Chris Pendleton

LYNCHBURG, Va.—Behind a season-high 23 points from Anders Jacobson (Kitty Hawk, N.C.), the Southern Virginia University men's basketball team defeated the Virginia University of Lynchburg Dragons 81-54 on Saturday in the final game of the 2012 VUL Classic.

With Saturday's win, Southern Virginia (6-2) tied the best start through eight games in program history.

"We lost a really tough game here last year," said first-year Head Coach Tony Caputo referring to Southern Virginia's 70-67 loss at Virginia-Lynchburg on Jan. 20, 2012. "We wanted to use this game as a measuring stick for our progress and we played as good of a second half as I can remember."

Southern Virginia got off to a slow start at Virginia-Lynchburg (7-9) on Saturday falling behind 10-2 at the 14:57 mark before outscoring the Dragons 27-16 over the final 15 minutes of the first half to take a three-point lead (29-26) into halftime.

Following intermission, the Knights exploded offensively outscoring Virginia-Lynchburg 52-28 in the second half, while shooting 61.3 percent (19-for-31) from the floor and 50 percent (3-for-6) from behind the arc over the final 20 minutes of play.

A. Jacobson poured in 23 points for the Knights, including 15 in the second half, on 7-for-10 shooting and 2-for-2 from 3-point range, while connecting on all seven of his free-throw attempts.

Casey Nye (Kaysville, Utah) and Seth Richins (Mesa, Ariz.) were the only other Knights to reach double figures against Virginia-Lynchburg adding 11 and 10 respectively. Nine different players have reached double figures for Southern Virginia so far this season.

On the defensive side of the ball, Southern Virginia held the Dragons to their second-lowest point total (54) of the year as Virginia-Lynchburg shot only 33.9 percent (19-for-56) from the floor and 25.0 percent (3-for-12) from behind the arc.

Southern Virginia also took great care of the ball on Saturday committing a season-low 8 turnovers for the game compared to 14 by the Dragons.

Southern Virginia will face Virginia-Lynchburg twice more this season at home in The Barn on Jan. 11, 2013 and Feb. 16, 2013.

Men's basketball has only one remaining game this semester on Thursday, Dec. 13 at NCAA Division I Longwood University. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
