HARRISONBURG, Va. — Led by Casey Nye's 25 points and 10 rebounds, the Southern Virginia University men's basketball team defeated Bridgewater College 67-54 in Friday's opening game of the EMU Tip-Off Classic.
After struggling to find an offensive rhythm early in the game—the Knights shot only 30 percent in the opening period—Southern Virginia entered the half trailing Bridgewater by one. Nye's aggressive second-half play helped turn the tide for the Knights who outscored Bridgewater by 14 in the period while shooting 50 percent from the floor.
Ky Raymond had another strong outing for Southern Virginia as the freshman recorded his second double-double in five games, scoring 11 points and grabbing 12 boards.
With the win, Southern Virginia snaps a three-game slide and moves to 2-3, while Bridgewater falls to 0-2 on the young season. The two teams will face off for a second time next Wednesday, Nov. 24 at Bridgewater.
Men's basketball faces two more opponents before Wednesday's rematch with Bridgewater. First the Knights play their third game in three nights when they match-up against EMU Tip-Off Classic host, Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 8 p.m.
Then Southern Virginia will make the short trip to Lexington, Va. on Tuesday, Nov. 23 to play NCAA Division I opponent, Virginia Military Institute. The game is schedule to begin at 7 p.m.
