First Half Lead Stands as Knights Beat Wesley

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. Ade Swann's 22-points helped the Southern Virginia Men's Basketball team to a 76-71 victory over Wesley at the Christopher Newport Invitational. The Knights again had multiple players in double figures as Bryce Pendleton (14-points), Chris Lewis (14-points) and Casey Nye (11-points) each contributed to the victory in the second game of the invitational.

SVU went in to the half with a 37-33 lead. SVU as able to take the lead thanks to a strong showing at the free-throw line as the Knights went 15 for 18 from the line in the first term. The second half was a back-and-forth affair as the teams looked to gain the upper hand. SVU shot 46% from the field in the second half to keep Wesley at bay. Free throw shooting again was a key to the victory as SVU went to the line twenty times in the second half.

"You practice free-throws for a reason," said Head Coach Brian Pendleton. "30-points from the line is a fantastic thing, and we got the win in large part due to the easy points. I'm also happy because we forced the issue and pushed to the basket to get the points and got the calls to send us to the line. We took initiative, and got good results because of it."

SVU shot almost 79% from the free-throw line to accompany the 37% shooting from the field. The Knights pulled down 37 rebounds, led by Lewis and Jed Harr who each pulled down 5. The Knights move to 6-2 on the season. SVU will take on Christopher Newport Nov. 28 on the second day of the invitational.
