Men's Basketball Named Knight Awards' Male Team of the Year

BUENA VISTA, Va. Based on on-line voting, and SVU athletic staff voting, the Southern Virginia Men’s Basketball team has won the 2009-2010 Knight Awards’ Male Team of the Year. The Knight Awards celebrate the accomplishments of Southern Virginia athletes for a year. The voting comes from the votes of fans on-line, and then is a combined with the votes of the athletic department staff to determine the winner.

The 2009-2010 basketball team finished out the best percentage wise record in the history of the program. The team finished 16-9, and had legitimate opportunities to go for 20-wins, but inclement weather cancelled several games late in the season. The Knights took the record, and headed into the USCAA Tournament as the #2 seed. SVU had a magical run in the tournament, as they ended up in the championship match against the defending champions, Talladega.

A close fought game got away from the Knights in the end, as Talladega won, and repeated, leaving the Knights with a second place finish. The second place, was the highest finish for the program since the 2003-2004 season.

A highlight for the Knights came as they welcomed Eastern Mennonite to “the Barn” in December. EMU was in the top 25 of NCAA D.III, and the hosts were not gracious as they ran the Royals out of the building with a convincing 92-79 win. The win takes on added meaning after the season, as EMU eventually finished in the top 10 on NCAA D.III. Another big game for the Knights came in the defeat to NCAA D.I Virginia Military Institute. SVU gave the D.I school all it could handle, and had a few leads early on, before falling to the Keydets by 12.

Personal awards came for the team as Bryce Pendleton was named a USCAA All-American, and an Academic All-American. Cory Evans added a USCAA Honorable Mention and Academci All-American award to the list, and Ade Swann also joined the group as an Honorable Mention team member. Derek Cutler was an Academic All-American. Pendleton and Evans were named to the All-Tournament team, and Pendleton also garnered VaSID All-State Second Team honors. Evans and Swann were named Players of the week of the USCAA at different points in the year.

The Southern Virginia Athletic department would like to congratulate the 2009-2010 Men’s Basketball team for its accomplishments and successes.
