BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University football team suffered a 47-27 loss Saturday afternoon against Randolph-Macon College at Knight Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets (6-1) scored the games first touchdown of the game when Presley Egbers completed a five-yard pass to Jordan Foster for the 6-0 lead (following a missed PAT attempt). Randolph-Macon's defense then capitalized on the Knights (2-3) first mistake of the day on a 53-yard pick-six from Calvin Whitehead extending the lead 12-0 after missing a two-point conversion.
Southern Virginia cut into the 12-0 deficit in the second quarter with a 7-play, 56-yard drive that was capped off on a Akiva Wedge rushing touchdown from four yards out, pulling the Knights to within five.
After a 57-yard kickoff Yellow Jacket kickoff return, Tre Frederick found the end zone on a 27-yard rush to go up 20-7. Randolph-Macon built on their lead, scoring 15 more unanswered points before the half. The Yellow Jackets scored on their second pick-six of the game and then on the ground on a Shaheed Adeyola rush from five yards to take a 34-7 lead into the half.
Randolph-Macon wasted no time in the second half to increase their lead scoring on their first possession to lead now 41-7.
The Knights snapped their scoring drought in the third quarter. Davis Pinkston connected with senior wide receiver Kevin Adams for an 8-yard touchdown making the score 41-14 (following a successful Jackson Hatch PAT).
Southern Virginia opened the fourth quarter with Pinkston's second passing touchdown of the game, this time finding freshman Matthew Johansson for seven yards.
The Yellow Jackets added their final score just over the seven-minute mark making the score 47-21.
The next possession for the Knights resulted in Southern Virginia marching 69 yards on 12 plays in 3:17. Pinkston set a new career-high three passing touchdowns after his 7-yard completion to Adams for his second touchdown reception on the day.
The Yellow Jackets then ran out the clock with a handful of successful rushing attempted to collect the 47-27 victory.
Pinkston threw for a career-high 200 yards in the loss, throwing 23-42 while Wedge led the rushing attack for the Knights with 87 rushing yards on 19 attempts.
Adams anchored the receiving core with a career day, setting a new program record in the Division III era with 12 receptions. He added a career-high 125 receiving yards, and two touchdowns.
Leading Southern Virginia on defense was senior Neil Davis, who tallied 15 total tackles (nine solos), 0.5 tackles for loss, and two pass breakups. Freshman Nate Matis also reached double-figures with ten tackles at the linebacker position while Joel Bergman added eight tackles and an interception.
The Knights will travel to Ferrum College next Saturday, Oct. 26, with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
