FOREST, Va. — Southern Virginia University senior Akiva Wedge was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week in addition to being named Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Football Offensive Player of the Week.
Currently in its 21st year, D3football.com Team of the Week, presented by Scoutware, nationally recognizes the best Division III performers at each position from the previous week—only two running backs are selected for the accolade. Wedge becomes the first in Southern Virginia history to receive the award.
Wedge also received ODAC Offensive Player of the Week honors after starring in the Knights 29-17 win over Hampden-Sydney in their ODAC opener. His 19 carries for 237 yards (12.5 yards per carry) set a new program record for rushing yards in a single game since joining Division III. Wedge's 237 rushing yards are the second most all-time for a single game in Southern Virginia history behind Hayes Page's 251 yards in 2007.
The Forestville, Maryland, native scored a career-high three touchdowns against Hampden-Sydney on rushes from 41, 53, and 75 yards. Wedge also led the Knights with four receptions for 34 yards, for a total of 271 all-purpose yards.
The Knights are off to their first 2-0 start since joining Division III and will play their first road game of the 2019 season at undefeated Bridgewater College Sept. 28. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
