NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Southern Virginia University football team opened the 2018 season on the road against Christopher Newport, falling to the Captains 38-9.
"We saw some bright spots out there tonight," said Head Coach Ed Mulitalo. "We played a tough team, football is a game that you make mistakes learn from them and make adjustments. I thought our defense did a good job tonight with playing heavy minutes. We look forward to get better this week in practice and return home this week and play in front of our crowd."
Christopher Newport (1-0, 1-0 NJAC) marched down the field 67 yards scoring the game's first touchdown on a Nick Hunter two-yard reception from Jack Anderson.
Early in the second, the Captains extended their lead to 14-0 on Jack Anderson's second passing touchdown of the game. With less than fifteen seconds remaining in the half Christopher Newport scored their third touchdown on Jack Anderson's one yard find to Michael Vandertulip in the end zone making the game 21-0 at the half.
Five in a half minutes into the third the Captains were able to tack on a 25-yard field goal from Ben Garbarini, increasing the lead to 24. The Captains earned its fourth touchdown on a Kyree Burton 37-yard touchdown reception, pushing the lead to 31-0.
The Knights scored its first points of the season with 27 seconds remaining in the third on a 25-yard field goal from special teams captain Jackson Hatch.
Christopher Newport's C.J. Donaldson earned the only rushing touchdown of the game on a two-yard run, coming late in the fourth producing the final score of 38-9.
Albert Green IV led the Knight's defense with 11 total tackles and recording his first interception of the year, senior Joel Bergman also added 10 total tackles. Freshman Mason Fauatea recorded four total tackles and his first sack as a Knight.
The Knights return for the home opener against Rowan University at 7:00 p.m. at Knight Stadium.
