BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia University football team took a tough New Jersey Athletic Conference loss on Saturday afternoon, being held scoreless by Montclair State University.
The Red Hawks (1-1, 1-0 NJAC) scored on their opening drive of the game, sending an 18-yard field goal through the uprights for an early 3-0 lead. Later in the quarter, Montclair found the end zone on a seven-yard pass.
With a 24-yard touchdown in the second quarter, the Red Hawks took a 17-0 lead at the half. Neither team scored in the third, and Montclair added one more score in the final period.
The Knights (0-3, 0-3 NJAC) recorded 200 yards of total offense, with 12 first downs. Running back John Harris led the team with 46 yards on four carries. Quarterback Ty Jones rushed for 41 yards while throwing for 36. Jones was intercepted twice over the course of the game.
Defensively, Southern Virginia was led by Joel Bergman, who recorded seven tackles and two tackles for a loss along with NJAC honorable mention Mitch Orme. Linebacker John Mellor tallied six tackles. Sophomore Skyler Cloward recorded the Knights only sack and recovered a fumble.
Southern Virginia will take the field again next Saturday at 1 p.m. as it hosts Kean University.
