NJAC Releases 2014 Preseason Football Poll

PITMAN, N.J.—As the 2014 football season approaches, Southern Virginia University has been picked to finish eighth in the New Jersey Athletic Conference preseason poll as announced by the league Tuesday morning.

As the Knights embark on their first season as a member of the NJAC under first year head coach Jason Walker, Southern Virginia is coming off its most successful season in school history with an 8-2 record from the 2013 campaign.

Rowan was selected as the conference's top team to open the season with seven first-place votes followed by Cortland State, which received one vote. Montclair State, Kean and Morrisville State rounded out the top five.

"We have a lot to prove in this league and I'm excited that we have the opportunity to surprise some people with our talent," Walker said. "I think we have a good team returning and I'm looking forward to seeing the contributions our incoming class will make."

The Knights faced an NJAC program last season in The College of New Jersey, falling by a close 7-2 score on the road. TCNJ comes into the 2014 season picked to finished sixth in the league race.

The Knights open their season on Saturday, Sept. 6, as they face Methodist on the road. Southern Virginia begins its inaugural NJAC slate on the road at Kean in early October.

NJAC programs will play seven conference games during an 11-week season. The winner of the NJAC championship receives the conference's automatic qualification to the NCAA Division III national championship tournament.
