Football Finishes No. 1 in USCAA Coaches’ Poll

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—Completing a program best eight-win season, the Southern Virginia University football team finished the 2013 campaign ranked No. 1 based on the final United States Collegiate Athletic Association coaches' poll released in Newport News, Va.

The Knights earned 53 voting points to 52 for Ave Maria, which finished second in the poll. Lindenwood University-Belleville placed third with 41 points, while Alfred State College came in fourth with 40 points. During the season, Southern Virginia twice defeated USCAA foe The Apprentice School, which finished in seventh with 26 points.

"The 83 young men who reported to camp in August have earned the right to be ranked No. 1 in the USCAA," said Southern Virginia head coach DeLane Fitzgerald. "They reported to meetings and practice each day wanting to become better football players and wanting to become a better team, and through extraordinary effort this special group of young men accomplished this. As a coaching staff, we are very proud of them." 

Southern Virginia tied Ave Maria with the best record in the USCAA at 8-2 on the year. To go with its best record to date, Southern Virginia broke multiple school top-5 records in its historic season.

On the offensive end, the Knights combined for 1,780 rushing yards, which ranks No. 3 in program history, in addition to 19 rushing touchdowns, third most in school history. Through the air, Southern Virginia averaged 13.94 yards per catch, second best in program history. The Knights achieved 3,230 of total offense during the season, fourth best in school history, and averaged 323 yards per game of total offense, third best since the program's inception in 2003.

On defense, Southern Virginia earned the No. 1 spot in tackles for loss with 98.5 and sacks with 32 for the year. The 362 yards from tackles for loss ranks second-most in program history. The team also registered 38 pass breakups on the year, fourth most in school history, and blocked six kicks, tied for second-most in program history.
