In its final regular season game, the Southern Virginia University football team will host Division III opponent Southwestern University out of Georgetown, Texas this Saturday at Robert E. "Bobby" Williams Field in Buena Vista, Va. This will be the first ever meeting between the two squads with a kickoff time slated for 1 p.m. EST.

Southwestern University is a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and will enter this week's contest with an 0-9 record, its most recent loss coming against Trinity University (Texas) in a 58-20 decision. The Pirates are participating in a historic season as this marks the first year they have had a football program since 1950.

Southern Virginia (7-2) comes into its final game riding a five-game winning streak after defeating Alfred State last week. The Knights will look to continue its historic season after last week's victory set program records for wins (7), win streak (5) and its first ever shutout (Football Breaks School Mark with Seventh Win of Season in Shutout).

Fitzgerald on Southwestern University

"They're playing a lot of freshmen, but their head coach, Joe Austin, is building a football program the correct way and he's doing a nice job because he's playing some young guys and they're taking their lumps. They're going to be very good in the future. They have as good and as complex of a passing game that we've faced all year. They probably run between 25 and 30 different route combinations and do a really nice job protecting the quarterback.

"They run the power and speed options and they do a nice job with that. They turn around on the defensive side of the football and the defensive coordinator has them running to the football and playing really hard.

"In the kicking game, I've been impressed with their kickers and punters. Their kick returners are very good. They do a nice job with special teams.

"I have been impressed with them as a first-year program for what they've done, and the quality of their opponents has been really high. Give Joe a couple years down there and he'll have it rolling."

Southern Virginia Head Coach DeLane Fitzgerald

DeLane Fitzgerald is in his fifth season as head football coach at Southern Virginia and is in his 12th year of coaching collegiate football, making previous stops at his alma mater James Madison University (NCAA DI-FCS), the University of Tennessee at Martin (NCAA DI-FCS) and Bethel College (NAIA).

In his four-plus years as Southern Virginia's head coach, Fitzgerald has posted a 23-30 overall record, including a 5-6 record in 2012.

Fitzgerald became the winningest coach in Southern Virginia football's 11-year history in 2011, passing Mike Smith who went 9-13 overall from 2007-08.

Southwestern University Head Coach Joe Austin

Joe Austin was named head football coach of Southwestern University in February 2012 and is leading the football program in its first season in 63 years.

Prior to Southwestern, Austin held head coaching stints at Hanover College (Ind.) and the University of Dubuque (Iowa). While at the helm, Austin led both schools to winning records and helped the offense at Dubuque set several school records.

Austin also was the offensive coordinator at Augsburg College (Minn.) and Concordia University (Minn.) before heading to the University of Dubuque.

Austin is a 2001 Concordia University graduate with a degree in communication studies. He also played football at St. Ambrose University as a quarterback.
