Three Gridders Receive Academic All-District Honors

By Laura Tome

BUENA VISTA, Va.—Southern Virginia University football team members Keaton Epps, Robert Robbins and Tod Workman have been named to a Capital One Academic All-District football team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday afternoon.

The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight districts. NCAA Divisions I, II, III and College Division separate each district. A scholar-athlete must have at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or important reserve to receive recognition.

Southern Virginia is a member of District 5, which includes Washington & Lee, Bridgewater, Averett, Christopher Newport, Emory & Henry, Washington University and several other institutions.

Having qualified for all-district honors, the trio is up for consideration for the Capital One Academic All-America Team to be announced at a later date in November.

"It's hard to come across a collective group of athletes that work harder than Tod, Keaton and Robbie," said Southern Virginia head coach DeLane Fitzgerald. "That says a lot because we have many members of our team who give it their all in everything they do. These three have great character and they work hard. They're deserving of this honor."

As a defensive end for the Knights, Epps, a Wake Forest, N.C. native, has started all eight games this season and has earned 23 solo tackles, 13 assisted tackles and leads the team in forced fumbles.

Robert Robbins, from Phoenix, Ariz., is pursuing a degree in business management and leadership and leads the team as a co-captain. Robbins has started all eight games as a linebacker for the Knights and has earned 29 solo tackles, 25 assisted tackles and leads the team in QB hurries this season.

Workman, a Nutrioso, Ariz. native, has played seven games with the Knights as a key running back and special teams player. He rushed for 101 yards against The Apprentice School on Oct. 19 and is tied for a season high in average yards per rush. Workman is majoring in Spanish and working toward a Spanish teaching license.

Epps, Robbins and Workman have each played crucial roles in helping the Knights (6-2) tie for the most wins in a single season in program history. The three will lead their team at home versus Alfred State on Saturday at 1 p.m. for an opportunity to break the school record.
