The Southern Virginia University football team for the first time ever will play NAIA opponent Bluefield College this Saturday as it completes its third consecutive home game before going on the road next week. Kickoff time is slated for 1 p.m. The Knights will look to extend their winning streak to three games with a win over the Rams.
Bluefield College, out of Bluefield, Va., is seeking a historic first victory since the football program returned to action in 2012. This is only the Rams' second season as the college has not had football since the 1940's.
The Knights (4-2) will look for home field advantage to help continue their best start in program history as they face off against Bluefield College (0-7) this week.
Fitzgerald on Bluefield College
"They are very athletic - their running backs can run and they have one of the best run games that we're going to face this fall. They do a nice job running the dive option with some zone option mixed in. They've got wide receivers that catch it when the ball is thrown their way. Receiver Rodrell Smith is from my hometown and was the 100-meter champion in the state of Virginia. If he gets by us we're in trouble.
"In a nutshell, they're very well-coached and they have the best run game that we've seen thus far. Their receivers make good plays on the football. Defensively, they're a three-man front and they mix up their schemes, throwing in various coverage and blitz packages. It's going to be a good football game."
Southern Virginia Head Coach DeLane Fitzgerald
DeLane Fitzgerald is in his fifth season as head football coach at Southern Virginia and is in his 12th year of coaching collegiate football, making previous stops at his alma mater James Madison University (NCAA DI-FCS), the University of Tennessee at Martin (NCAA DI-FCS) and Bethel College (NAIA).
In his four-plus years as Southern Virginia's head coach, Fitzgerald has posted a 20-30 overall record, including a 5-6 record in 2012.
Fitzgerald became the winningest coach in Southern Virginia football's 11-year history in 2011, passing Mike Smith who went 9-13 overall from 2007-08.
Bluefield College Head Coach Ordell Walker
Ordell Walker was named head football coach on May 31, 2013. Walker began his coaching career after graduating from Trinity International University in 1999. At Trinity he served as defensive line coach before becoming assistant coach and defensive coordinator at North Chicago High School.
He returned to Trinity International College in 2002 for a short stint again as defensive line coach, before beginning his 11-year career at Division III Greenville College (Ill.) the very next year.
While at Greenville College he served as assistant coach for seven years, then was named head coach in 2010. While at the head-coaching helm he led the Panthers to various UMAC conference championships and bowl victories, and was named the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference coach of the year in 2010.
