Sanford Named USCAA Offensive Player of the Week

By Lancaster Brown

BUENA VISTA, Va.—After his performance over the weekend against The Apprentice School, Southern Virginia University senior Dee Sanford was named the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hattiesburg, Miss., native had his best game of the year recording seven receptions for 131 yards and pulling in two touchdowns against the Shipbuilders. He also had 14 punt return yards, giving him a total of 145 all-purpose yards on the day.

Sanford's strong outing was highlighted by Southern Virginia's longest completion of the year, a 59-yard touchdown reception, on a pass thrown by quarterback Andy Jones in the third quarter. Sanford and Jones also connected earlier in the game on an eight-yard touchdown pass in the back corner of the end zone.

"We've been very pleased with Dee the last few weeks," said Southern Virginia head coach DeLane Fitzgerald. "He has really taken the initiative to improve his game and looking for areas he wants to get better at. We're happy with his progress and hope he continues to contribute to the team."

Sanford, a first-year transfer from Belhaven College in Jackson, Miss., has been a solid contributor in his lone season for the Knights. He leads the team in every receiving category this season, including receptions (24), receiving yards (381), and receiving touchdowns (4).

With the honor Sanford joins teammates Dakoda Winsor (Defense), Colter Evans (Defense), Justin Gonzales and Davis Cragun (Special Teams) as those who have earned USCAA Player of the Week honors this season.

Southern Virginia will play its third straight home game this Saturday, Oct. 26.  The Knights will be facing Bluefield College with kickoff set for 1 p.m. at Robert E. Williams Field in Buena Vista, Va.
