Preview

After a three-game road swing and a week off, the Southern Virginia University football team will return to action at home to Robert E. "Bobby" Williams Field this Saturday to play NAIA opponent Warner University out of Lake Wales, Fla. After losing a defensive battle to The College of New Jersey in their last contest, the Knights will look to get back on track against the Royals in the first ever meeting between the two squads.

Warner University is in its inaugural season as a football program. The Royals enter this week's contest with an 0-6 record, but have played a tough season schedule thus far with losses against Alcorn State University (D-I), Mercer University (D-I), Jacksonville University (D-I FCS) and Stetson University (D-I FCS). The Royals' other two losses came against Ave Maria University and Webber International, both schools which Southern Virginia played last season. The Knights look for home field advantage this week to help bring their season record above .500 to 3-2.

Fitzgerald on Warner University

"Warner is a very good football team. Their wide receivers are as athletic as anybody we'll face this year. Their quarterback is solid and does a great job of leading their offense. They do a lot of things that worry us."

"Defensively, their linebackers and safeties are good football players. Their defense and special teams have been the highlight of their season so far. They're very competitive on defense and special teams."

"They're much better than their record appears. They come in having played four Division I-AA schools. The two NAIA schools they lost to are good football teams. Warner is very well-coached and they're very athletic."

Southern Virginia Head Coach DeLane Fitzgerald

DeLane Fitzgerald is in his fifth season as head football coach at Southern Virginia and is in his 12th year of coaching collegiate football, making previous stops at his alma mater James Madison University (NCAA DI-FCS), the University of Tennessee at Martin (NCAA DI-FCS) and Bethel College (NAIA).

In his four-plus years as Southern Virginia's head coach, Fitzgerald has posted a 18-30 overall record, including back-to-back 4-7 seasons in 2010 and 2011 and 5-6 in 2012.

Fitzgerald became the winningest coach in Southern Virginia football's 10-year history in 2011, passing Mike Smith who went 9-13 overall from 2007-08.

Warner University Head Coach Jeff Schaum

Jeff Schaum was named Warner University's first ever head football coach in 2012. He came to the school with 28 years of coaching experience after graduating in 1983 from Colgate University.

Since 2004, Schaum had various stints at local high schools in Florida while compiling a 51-30 record. Previous to 2004 he had 13 years of collegiate coaching experience at various schools including McMurray University (Texas), Cisco Junior College (Texas), Central State University (Ohio), Trinity Valley Community College (Texas), Lees-McRae College (N.C.), and Southwest Texas State (now Texas State). Schaum started his coaching career at Florida State University as a graduate assistant under legendary Seminoles head coach Bobby Bowden.
