Evans Named USCAA Defensive Player of the Week

By Daniel Whitehead

BUENA VISTA, Va.—Following his performance last weekend at VU-Lynchburg, Southern Virginia University junior Colter Evans was named the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.

The Wayan, Idaho, native led the Knights' defensive efforts with 12 tackles, including eight solo takedowns, on the day. He also accounted for a half-tackle for loss of one yard and one pass breakup to disrupt the VUL attack.

"We started off kind of slow on defense and had some breakdowns they took advantage of, but we hustled to the ball and made big plays," Evans said. "Both the coaches and players made adjustments at halftime after we saw what they were trying to do. It wasn't pretty, but we got the win."

The Knights went on to defeat the Dragons, 33-31, on their final drive of the game. Sophomore quarterback Andy Jones scored on a two-yard quarterback sneak with just 36 seconds remaining in the game to earn the victory. Junior Jerry Washington paced the Knight offense with 173 yards on 34 carries.

It was Southern Virginia's second USCAA honor of the season as freshman Justin Gonzales was named last week's Special Teams Player of the Week.

Southern Virginia travels to Ewing Township, N.J., on Saturday to face The College of New Jersey. Kickoff is set for noon.
