BUENA VISTA, Va. The Southern Virginia Football team, under second-year head coach DeLane Fitzgerald, opened fall camp on Aug. 7. Fitzgerald's second term looks to be starting well, as the coaching staff expects 93-players in camp. The team includes, according to coaching staff members, the best freshman class in the history of the program.
SVU will hold two daily practices. The first will be a morning sessions followed by an evening session. All practices are at the Southern Virginia practice fields, and all fans are welcome to attend, but are asked to not use cameras during the practices. The facilities improvement is something Fitzgerald hopes to use to his advantage.
"Having a place to call our own is a huge positive for the program," said Fitzgerald. "The setting is perfect, and our guys enjoys playing on the field. The synthetic turf allows us to do a lot more without the fear of ruining the surface."
The Knights will look to use the camp to prepare for a challenging season, which includes some powerhouse NCAA D.III teams. Fitzgerald will have two and a half weeks for preparation, as the Knights will finish camp with a game against NCAA D.II foe Concord on August 26.
