Mellor And Canady Named To NAIA All-Independent Team
BUENA VISTA, Va. - Senior linebacker, Matt Mellor, and junior fullback, Thomas Canady, have been named to the 2010 NAIA All-Independent First-Team. The team is voted on by coaches from the Independent conference of the NAIA.
Mellor's award makes it two consecutive years with him earning the award, after he was named to the first team last year. The senior finished with 82-tackles, and broke the all-time tackles record at SVU, along with several punting records for the Knights. Mellor was on the pre-season all-independent first team, and played a solid senior leading to the award.
Canady, also had been named to the pre-season team, and put forth a strong junior season to make the team. Canady was relied on from the fullback spot to create holes for the SVU running game. Canady helped an SVU offense that accumulated over 2500-yards, and also won the second most games in a season in program history.
The two players were not the only ones to receive recognition for SVU. Jacob Lee, Brick Wilce and Tommy Davidson were named to the NAIA All-Independent Second-Team. Lee, a sophomore from Mount Olive, N.C. was a towering figure for the Knights on the offensive line, as he helped the offense click.
Wilce had a breakout season for the Knights, as he led the team in receptions, as well as touchdown receptions with eight. Wilce had been named NAIA Independent Freshman of the Week earlier in the season, and he became a favorite target in the passing game.
Davidson played a close second to Mellor in the tackling game. The junior linebacker had the second highest total of tackles for the season, and made a dent on offenses as he placed second in tackles for loss.
