BUENA VISTA, Va. After back-to-back losses, the Southern Virginia football team will be looking to get back in the win column with a homecoming victory over visiting Guilford. The Knights gave a valiant effort in the loss to Bridgewater in a Thursday night game. SVU had a solid effort, as Zach Garner threw for 258-yards, and two touchdowns. Brick Wilce had 6-receptions, and caught Garner's two passes for touchdowns. Even with the offensive heroics of the duo, the Knights could not get the win over the Eagles. The Quakers are in a similar boat, as they fell to a former foe of the Knights in Washington & Lee, 55-29.
Looking at the Quakers
Guilford will be looking for more than just getting back to winning ways, as a win over the Knights would mean the first win of the season for the Quakers. The loss to the Generals pushed GC to a 0-4 record, as they already had suffered losses to Greensboro, Methodist and Averett. The loss to the Generals was bitter, as points were self-inflicted after five turnovers.
Another Threat Through The Air
Against the Eagles, SVU faced off with a talented receiver, and this game will be no different. Guilford boasts receiver Ben King, who is averaging 106-yards in receptions per game. He has 424-total yards, and has pulled in 4-touchdowns on the season.
Key Players For Guilford
The Quakers are led by Mike Williams in the rushing attack, as he has 121-yards, on 24-carries. GC has had its struggles in the running game, as they are averaging only 98.2-yards per game. In the passing game, Guilford is averaging 229-yards per game. Quarterback Luke Vandall has been the one called on to go under center, and has responded with 69-of-109 throwing for 787-yards, and six touchdowns. The offense has been guided by backup, Billy Watkins at times. The Quaker defense is giving up over 400-yards per game in the four losses, and is surrendering almost 36-points per game.
History vs. Guilford
A win on Saturday would be another history making win for the Knights, as they would get a first time win over the Quakers. Much like SVU in facing Ferrum previous to this season, the Knights have not had much luck with the team from Greensboro, N.C. Southern Virginia has not had close games against the ODAC foes, as they have lost by double-digit deficits in all three games against the Quakers. Last season the team could not break a losing streak, or get a series win over GC, losing 48-6. SVU fell behind early as the Quakers were able to record the first three touchdowns of the game. Daniel Bokinsky received a pass from Sam Trulock in the second quarter to get on the board, and looked to be in striking distance of the hosts. Momentum was lost for the Knights when they failed to convert on the two-point conversion.
SVU racked up 150 yards rushing in one of their best ground performances of the year. The passing game also performed well as SVU threw for 187 yards, and got the lone score of the game through the air. But the Knights were undone again by a familiar foe in turnovers. SVU coughed up the ball six times on the day with two lost fumbles and four interceptions. The Knights were also unable to stop a balanced Quaker attack with 275 yards rushing and 242 yards passing.
Mellor Marching To The Top
Senior linebacker, Matt Mellor, had a phenomenal game against Bridgewater, as he recorded 11-total tackles. The amount pushed him even closer to Shea Owens, as the all-time tackles leader in SVU football history. His 233-total tackles means he needs only 31-tackles to break the record. Mellor also holds the unassisted tackles record, as he now has 149-unassisted tackles in his career.
A win for the Knights would get them back in the win column for the season, but would also get them consecutive homecoming wins for the first time in program history. Last year's 51-12 triumph over George Mason gave the Knights a victory on homecoming, and puts them in position for the consecutive homecoming wins.
Fans able to attend the game will be treated to a great halftime schedule of events. Both the cheerleaders, and dance team will perform. Mr. and Mrs. SVU will be announced during halftime. An SVU fundraising event, involving President Smith will be in the schedule, and 2010 SVU Legacy Athletes will be announced. A legacy athlete is any SVU athlete who competed for four years as a Knight, and graduated from Southern Virginia
