COLUMBIA, Ky. Looking for momentum from a home opening win, the Southern Virginia Football team could not overcome big Lindsey Wilson plays, and lost to the Blue Raiders, 44-3. The Knights were unable to get on track offensively, and could only total 8-yards of offense all day, as they fell for the second game of the season. Despite giving up big yards to the hosts, the SVU defense had a solid game, and the SVU coaching staff is optimistic of the potential in the group.
Things did not start well for the Knights, as they kicked off to LWC, and then saw a quick strike drive of two plays and 70-yards go past them for a touchdown. The 65-yard pass for the Blue Raiders put SVU under the gun, and the early lead proved to be all that the hosts would need in scoring their first win as a varsity program since 1935. Another long pass of 79-yards put LWC up by 14 in the first quarter, and SVU was left grasping for a response.
A 21-yard field goal from Travis Bowen got the Knights on the board in the second quarter. The score came after a 6-play 22-yard drive. Southern Virginia now turned its attention to stopping the big play of the hosts. The defense was able to avoid large gains from LWC, but the Blue Raiders were able to use the clock, and the field, and marched 80-yards for a touchdown to put them up 21-3 heading in to the half.
Things got no better for the visitors, as they went scoreless for the second half, and surrendered three more scores to the Blue Raider offense. SVU was finding no room to move offensively, and suffered a fourth quarter safety to provide the final margin of victory for LWC.
Senior linebacker Matt Mellor logged big minutes again, as he led the team with 14-total tackles and a forced fumble, and also pulled double duty in special teams hitting 9-punts for 303-yards with a long of 47. Mellor also recorded a 9-yard sack in he second quarter. Tommy Davidson also was called on for big stops, as he recorded 7-total tackles. Fine Itaaehau stopped seven Blue Raiders with two stops for loss.
SVU will look te regroup as they travel to play Ferrum, Sep. 18. Kickoff for the Knights is 1:00. SVU will be looking for the first win in program history over the Panthers.
