Knights Look For First 2-1 Start In Program history

BUENA VISTA, Va. The Southern Virginia Football team will look to make an historic step when they take on Lindsey Wilson, and look for a 2-1start for the first time in SVU history. The Knights will be taking on the Blue Raiders for the first time ever, after LWC restarted football after a 75-year layoff.

Lindsey Wilson At A Glance

The Blue Raiders (0-1) opened at home for the first time since the 1935 season. LWC hosted Notre Dame of Ohio (which was also starting its first game as a varsity program). A tightly contested affair saw Notre Dame take a 14-10 win to give them a first ever win. LWC's loss came after a fight back in the fourth quarter. Both teams went scoreless for the final term, and Lindsey Wilson will be looking for the first win in three quarters of a century when they host the Knights. LWC was able to gain 194-yards of total offense in the loss, but the defense came up big, as they limited Notre Dame to only 191-yards, which is top-25 NAIA for yards allowed, and points allowed.

Blue Raider Stadium

LWC will host SVU in the brand new Blue Raider Stadium. With the announcement of the return of football, the athletic department went about constructing a new stadium for the newest program on the LWC campus. The stadium holds 2400 people and has a synthetic turf surface similar to what the Field at SVU have.

Big Returns

Lindsey Wilson freshman Richard Kennedy got the Blue Raiders back in to the game with a 94-yard touchdown off a kickoff. Kennedy's average for the game vaulted him to the top spot in NAIA kickoff average at 59.5 yards. For his efforts, Kennedy was named the Victory Sports Network Special Teams Player of the Week.

Kicking For Distance

Senior linebacker and punter Matt Mellor has two punts over 60-yards. Mellor hit a bomb for 62-yards against Concord, and then followed that up with a 70-yard punt against Radford. The punt against Radford set the Knights up to record a safety which propelled them to a big win against the Highlanders.

SVU at a glance

The Knights come in to the game against the Blue Raiders after a strong outing with the Highlanders. The Knights scored 44-consecutive points on their way to a home opening win. Zach Garner threw for completed close to 50% of his passes, and hit three different players for a touchdown. Mellor, and junior linebacker Tommy Davidson combined for 19-tackles a piece, with Davidson recording 10-tackles, and Mellor 9. With the win SVU is averaging 275-yards per game, and is averaging 32.5 points per game.

Avoiding the penalty bug

SVU will be looking for a disciplined approach heading in to the competition. A big win for the Knights was tempered by the fact that they suffered 22-penalties for 193-yards.

Spreading the Wealth

Eight different players have scored a touchdown for the Knights with the majority of the scores coming from the air. Boyd McCauley, Mitch Stevenson and Steven Andreasen have the rushing touchdowns for the Knights this season.
