Knights Open At Home Looking For Win Over Radford

BUENA VISTA, Va. The Southern Virginia Football team looks to rebound from a tough loss to Concord, when they host the home opener against Radford Sept. 3 at 7:30 pm. Head coach DeLane Fitzgerald is hoping the second game of the season will be a turnaround game after the struggles in the previous game. The Highlanders will travel for their first game of the season.

Sophomore quarterback Zach Garner looks to improve from his previous outing as starting quarterback, last week, Garner threw for 110 yards while connecting on 14 of 26 attempts. Meanwhile Defensively Austin Cheney, Brett Kassel, and Matt Mellor led the Knights in tackles with 8-total tackles a piece, with the latter two players forcing fumbles. The Special teams unit had its own shining stars especially with senior punter Matt Mellor averaging 44.1 yards on 8 attempts.

 "Overall our team has been working really hard, and we are expecting an improvement from top to bottom. " said Coach Fitzgerald.

THE SVU-RADFORD SERIES

This will be the second game in the series between the schools. SVU was able to record a 40-20 victory over the Highlanders last season, and was part of the late season surge the team needed after a difficult start. Both games will have been played at Bobby Williams Field at Parry McCluer High School.

LAST TIME THE SCHOOLS FACED EACH OTHER

BUENA VISTA, Va. Led by Senior Sam Trulock and a strong defensive game, the Southern Virginia Football team beat Radford 40-20. Trulock, along with Josh Barrett combined for 165 yards passing and five touchdowns. The defense was able to pick off four Radford passes.

 

SCOUTING THE HIGHLANDERS

Radford is coming off a 4-5 season in 2009. The Highlanders closed out the year winning four of their last five. This year, Radford is ranked 10th in the NCFA preseason polls.
