BUENA VISTA, Va – The Southern Virginia University
Football team hosted a skills clinic last week on the new Southern
Virginia Practice Fields. In collaboration with the coaching staff
of Parry McCluer High School, SVU coaches and players assisted
local high school players in skill advancement and technical
ability. The camp was a great success and all had a great
experience.
"We had 52 participants in the camp this week," said SVU Head
Football Coach DeLane Fitzgerald." These kids had a great
opportunity to learn the necessary skills to help them in their
high school season. It was also a great opportunity for us to
present our program, and share what SVU is all about."
The campers trained from 5:00 in the evening till 7:00, and
received hands-on instruction from their high school coaches, and
the SVU staff.
Friday, the campers and staff welcomed Southern Virginia Athletic
Director Tom Longenecker to speak to them. Longenecker spoke to the
campers about the NAIA's Champions of Character program, and about
the new facilities that the football, soccer and lacrosse teams
would be using this year.
"This was a great week for everyone involved," said Fitzgerald.
"We are always excited when we can give back to the community. By
showing what our program is all about we hope to get people
interested in SVU football. These campers hopefully will be fans
for us this year, and hopefully our fan base increases because of
this."
