Four Named To USCAA Academic All-American List

BUENA VISTA, Va. Headlined by a second USCAA Academic All-American nod for David Haws, the Southern Virginia Football team had four players named to the USCAA Non-Sport Academic All-American List for the 2009 season. Joining Haws is Linebacker Matt Mellor, Cornerback Josh Hodges, and Offensive Lineman Michael Greer. Haws, from Bridgeport, W.V., already has received an academic award for his participation on the Men's Soccer team.

"This is a tremendous accomplishment for these young men," said Head coach DeLane Fitzgerald. "They have excelled on the field, and now we see that they have filled their obligations to truly be student-athletes. We are constantly preaching to these young men that they have to pull their weight in the classroom. I'm very happy with these awards. Success for a team doesn't just come on the field. This is a great success for us today."

The award goes to athletes who are a sophomore and above, and who currently carry a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Mellor, from Colfax, WA, was the leading tackler for the Knights this season. Greer, from Tempe, AZ was an important member of the offensive line that helped rack up over 1700 total yards. Hodges, from Irmo, S.C. was a leader in the defensive backfield, and recorded the most tackles of all SVU cornerbacks.

For Haws, this is another accomplishment for the kicker, who holds the distinct honor of having participated in the two sports and being the first player in SVU history to have played against two NCAA D.I teams in two days. He accomplished this feat in October when he played with the Men's Soccer team against Liberty University, and then the following day traveled with the football team to take on Gardner-Webb University.
