The Southern Virginia football team faced a daunting task when
they played at NCAA Division I-AA Morehead State on Saturday night.
The Knights were able to show improvement in the game, and did not
always play like the underdog they were, but ultimately were not
able to overpower the FCS school, playing in front of the home
fans, and eventually fell 61-10.
The Knights were able to show visible improvement according to
Head Coach DeLane Fitzgerald. "We learned from our mistakes last
week, and we showed on the field that we can improve," said
Fitzgerald. "Unfortunately, when you play a school like Morehead
State, you have little room for error. Our guys showed up and made
a stand tonight. At the end of the day, we are proud of the effort,
and we'll look to improve on execution for next week."
An encouraging sign for Fitzgerald is the budding partnership of
quarterback Sam Trulock, and receiver Brad Schultz. For the second
week in a row, the duo combined for a receiving touchdown, and the
Knight coaching staff is optimistic, that the pair will continue to
progress, and get better. Another encouraging sign is that the
Knights were able to get close to the Eagles in the
time-of-possesion game.
"Matching them in time-of-possession shows that we were not just
going three-and-out, but were able to put some drives together,"
said Fitzgerald. " We'll build on that, and as we become more
successful at that we'll get more points on the board."
The defense showed improvement from the first game, and was able
to hold the Eagles at certain points in the game. The two opening
setbacks have not dampened Fitzgerald's outlook on the season.
"We knew that these would be tough games to start the season. We
felt that despite the growing pains, the games would be
opportunities to improve, and hopefully be far better at the end of
the season, then at the beginning. I'm not happy that we lost, but
I also believe that we have been showing the improvement necessary
to win games. I think we'll see us in the winning column very
soon."
SVU's next competition will be Sept. 12 when they face Lincoln
University (PA) at Lincoln. This will be the second meeting between
the two teams, as SVU overcame the Lions last season 55-25. Game
time start is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
