BUENA VISTA, Va. Head coach, DeLane Fitzgerald, has announced the 2010 schedule for the Southern Virginia Football team. The schedule calls for eleven games, and sees familiar foes as well as new opponents for the Knights. The highlight for the schedule will be a Sept. 30 game against perennial ODAC title challenger Bridgewater. The Thursday night game will have added importance as the game will take place in Salem, VA at Salem Stadium. The stadium has been the venue for several NCAA D.III Football National Championships. All gate receipts for the game will go to support Habitat for Humanity.
SVU will see familiar faces in Concord, Ferrum, Brevard, Guilford, Webber International, Radford and Apprentice. SVU was able to record the program's first victory over apprentice last season as they scored a 14-10 Oyster Bowl victory against the Shipbuilders. The Knights scored a 40-20 win over Radford late in the season to help the team to a winning record in the last five games of the season.
The Knights will look to get their first wins against the other five teams. SVU will face new rivals in 2010, when they look to take on Lindsey Wilson on Sept. 11. Lindsey Wilson will have their inaugural season begin in 2010, and SVU will look to start the series with a win.
The Knights will face off against Kentucky Christian again, Oct. 30, after a one-year hiatus in the series. The Knights hold a 2-0 advantage over KCU, and will look to extend the streak. Southern Virginia will take on Wesley College for the first time in 5-seasons. SVU played Wesley in the first two seasons in program history, but has not faced off against the team from Delaware since 2004.
The Knights will start the season Aug. 26 when they travel to play at Concord. SVU will look to carry momentum from their season ending wins to carry them to an improvement from their 3-8 record the season before. The 2010 season will be the second one under Fitzgerald.
