BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Southern Virginia University spirit squad traveled to Bethlehem, Pa. on Saturday to compete in The Liberty Classic, where the dance team came home with a first place win and cheer placed second in its division. A number of Southern Virginia athletes also placed in solo and partner competitions.
"It was amazing to watch the cheer and dance teams come together to represent the University as well as they did,"
head coach Neely Pendleton commented. "All of their hard work and dedication really paid off."
With each squad competing in the collegiate division, the Knights' dance team received first-place honors with a score of 75.6, while the cheer team's score of 83.7 was good for second place, finishing just behind Moravian College.
Dance team freshmen Jessica Haggerty and Victoria Bisel each performed solos in the competition, with Haggerty winning the division and Bisel placing second.
Two Southern Virginia duos competed in partner stunting, with Seth Hanson and Stacey Hanson placing first, while senior Will Gurley and freshman Pearl Allen took second.
"I knew they could do it but I still think they were surprised by the results," Pendleton continued. I am incredibly proud of them!"
The Liberty Classic was hosted by Northampton Community College, and was the first competition for Southern Virginia's cheer program since 2006.
